WHAT IS YOGA?
Yoga originated in India several thousands of years ago, based on the Sanskrit work yukti meaning “union” or “yoke”. The principles of yoga combine a unique and ancient system of breathing practices, physical exercise, postures and meditation combined to integrate the practitioner’s body, mind and spirit.
WHY DO YOGA?
Yoga allows a practitioner to strengthen one’s core muscles of their body through both simple and challenging poses. Requiring a practitioner to focus on their breath patterns and rates throughout various poses allows for regulation of breath, strengthening of diaphragmatic muscles as well as calming one’s overall spirit. Asanas defined as physical postures involving stretching, bending and balancing are part of a yoga practice, and are used to help align the head and spinal column. Asanas also help keep the muscles and joints strong and flexible, stimulate circulation and endrocrine function.
